About the 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

The 1971 was the fourth year for the C3 generation of Corvettes but, unfortunately for horsepower enthusiasts, the future had arrived in the form of lower compression ratios. Unleaded gasoline and its lower octane rating forced the move and an era was over, never to return. The change caused the hp ratings of the LS5 motor to go from 390 hp (1970) to 365 hp.

Other than the motor, the 71 Corvette was essentially a carryover from the 1970 model, but with a few minor changes such as the front grilles now having raised chrome edges. Also, the 71 was the last year for the fiber optic light monitoring system located in front of and behind the shifter.

In total, 21,801 Corvettes were produced in 1971. Of those 14,680 were Coupes (7,121 were Convertibles) and 5097 came with the 454 (LS-5 Engine). Base model coupes had an M.S.R.P. of  $5,496.

In typical fashion, Chevrolet published a dealer brochure for the 71 Corvette  which highlighted the evolution of the car since the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line. This brochure, pictured below, is typical of early 1970's automotive advertising. Larger copies of these pages can be viewed by clicking on each picture.

About the car featured on this site

So, how did I get mixed up in a project like this? Well, I'm sure I'll ask myself that very question many times by the time I finish the restoration. For the most part it's because I've always had an affinity for the C3 model Corvettes (Model Years 1968-1983). Plus I always thought undertaking a car restoration of some sort would be a fun and rewarding project.

So, those two factors, combined with some prodding and egging-on by a few select co-workers, put me on the path of finding myself a worthy project car. After several months of perusing want-ads, classifieds and the internet, I came across the car pictured above. After a bit of research, a few phone calls to the owner,  and a road trip to inspect the car, I had found my project. I towed it home and soon thereafter the project began.
