Windshield Wiper Disassembly
This week progress on cleaning out the engine bay continues with the removal of the windshield wiper system. Like most other things on Corvettes, there are many pieces that make up the working wiper linkage and wiper door.
To begin I started by taking apart the wiper linkage which is located beneath the wiper door which was removed earlier in the project.

In addition to removing the windshield wiper linkage rods I also removed the wiper pivots. This will allow a more thorough cleanup of the wiper tub.

Below is a shot of the passenger side end of the wiper linkage as well as the vacuum interlock. The vacuum interlock allows the wiper door to close only when the wipers are in the fully down position.

To help illustrate the system, below are some schematics of the windshield wiper system. Larger larger versions of the last two wiper schematics are available by simply clicking on each of the images.

Next the windshield wiper motor was removed and set aside. Later down the road I’ll thoroughly inspect the motor to ensure it’s functioning properly.

Next the wiper door actuator was removed along with it’s associated vacuum lines…

And, after a few hours worth of work, below are most of the parts that make up the windshield wiper system on the car. Also shown in the photo are the left and right hood stops.

There’s still quite a bit of wiring related to the wiper system remaining in the engine bay, that will be tackled in the next update. Check back soon!
The wiper system is pretty complex on these C3 Corvettes. If you have any questions about how it goes together, or how it even works, just stop by the forum and ask. There are plenty of folks who have done this and can help answer any questions that are out there.
